News about the new Ourmedia

A new site, and a new merger

Welcome to the new Ourmedia! We'd like to hear from you about what we're doing where we should be heading next.

You'll notice a new, minimalist, less boxy (and overwhelming) design. We'll be adding back some of the functionalities (like Newest media or Latest comments) in the days ahead; we're trying to make it customizable to give you the option of displaying or hiding these modules.

We've returned to the fold of Drupal, the open-source content management system, after forking off with our original development team. Markus Sandy has upgraded the site to Drupal 5.1, which lets us implement a number of cool new features. We'll be rolling those out as they're completed, and all new code we'll be releasing back into the open-source community.

Now for some context. Development of Ourmedia essentially stopped in August 2005 after our original development team -- financed with co-founder Mark Canter's generous donations -- left the project. We tried to make a go of the all-volunteer coding approach, but it didn't work. We filed for status as a 501(c)3 nonprofit with the IRS, but never heard back after 15 long months. The site continued to operate, but it was slow, buggy, and, well, you know the rest.

As a result, days ago the Ourmedia Board of Directors voted unanimously to merge Ourmedia with Outhink Media.

Outhink has been helping us out -- without looking for anything in return -- for a long time, buying us new servers, paying legal fees, providing SpinXpress as a reliable publishing tool, etc. We've long had a commonality of interests: serving the wider community, supporting Creative Commons, and connecting people with legal, rights-cleared content. Some of the pioneers in videoblogging -- Jay Dedman, Michael Verdi, Markus Sandy -- are part of the Outhink team, along with founder Dave Toole, president Morty Wiggins, podcaster Chris Ritke, coder Eric Zimmerman and others. Outhink won't change our mission or commitment to serve the community; indeed, it's giving us the tools to succeed in those goals.

Now that we have stable servers and we're moving forward with development again, let's hear from you. What would you like to see on the site? We have some ideas, and an early roadmap of new features we'd like to roll out, but what do you consider the top priorities?
